If Italy is the boot, Sicily is the football. The largest of Italy’s islands, Sicily’s 3,000 years of history hums through the streets of historic Palermo, where you’ll find colourful street life, markets toting traditional food and crafts and Byzantine ruins. Looming over the eastern edge the great hulking mass of Europe’s largest volcano, Mount Enta, creating a historic shadow over the island, where European and African influences combine.

When to travel
Like much of Italy, August is peak season in Sicily when an exodus of Italians arrives on its shores to enjoy the superb weather and excellent beaches. Due to its southerly location the island stays pleasant well into late October, with the season starting earlier in late April and early May.
WEATHER: Sicily’s Mediterranean climate means hot, dry summers and warm, wet winters, with its mountainous terrain resulting in regional variations in climate.
