Belmond Hotel Cipriani
Venice
OVERVIEW
1958 was a good year for Venice, as the Belmond Hotel Cipriani opened its door for the first time. Since then it has welcomed the great and the good to its beautiful walled compound set in splendid isolation at the tip of the Giudecca, including George Clooney, he of the incredibly stylish Venetian wedding in which the groom and his family occupied the Cipriani – exclusive use, of course. As with many of Belmond’s supremely opulent hotels, the Cipriani offers pure luxury in one of the best locations in Venice.
While the tourists swarm like bees around the centre, the ‘Cip’ – as it is known – has a fabulous vantage point over the palaces and twinkling lights of the city. Access to the lagoon is easy: it’s just a short boat ride to San Marco on board the hotel’s sleek wooden motor launch. There is also a huge selection of tours available to help you immerse yourself in the fabulously glamorous culture of the city.
Wine lovers can embark on a tour of the lagoon’s vineyards, for example; alternatively, you could take a photography tour of the city with a knowledgeable guide, or a bacari tour which will reveal one of Venice’s best-loved traditions.

When to travel
The city of Venice floats on a web of canals and is therefore subject to high humidity year-round. The summer heat can be quite oppressive, and you may wish to avoid the ‘acqua alta’ floods, which usually occur in November and December. Otherwise, Venice is a popular destination at any time of the year.
WEATHER: Appropriately called the ‘city of water’ and not just for its canals, northerly Venice has cold, wet winters and hot, humid summers.
